I’m not entirely sure what exactly P. Djèlí Clark was going for here, but I enjoyed the ride. It was entertaining, fascinating, and the writing was spot-on.

Listened to this one on audiobook and can I just say Wow! Lynette R. Freeman delivered everything as the narrator! 4.5/5 stars but rounded up because she was amazing. This, for me, felt like a mash up of Six of Crows meets NOLA meets the mythological underworld.

This started out like a plain old action adventure assassin book. But then it got snarky, weird, and delightful. Amazing characters, deep worldbuilding, interesting magic system mechanics. What a fun romp! I loved, loved this one.

Brb, adding Clark's ENTIRE backlist to my TBR.

For fans of The Library at Mount Char, Gideon the Ninth, Mistborn Era 2

Took a premise and ran with it. Too short to outstay a welcome but I'd love to read more.
