...Basically, from what I can tell, this series REALLY wants to be Azumanga Daioh.

The problem is, it isn't. At all.

In Azumanga Daioh, we get the quirky interactions of basically normal high school girls who could be a little kooky (Tomo, Yomi), or outright eccentric and weird especially when it comes to dreams and daydreams (Osaka). In Nichijou...everyone is weird, and in ways that aren't really comprehensible. Azumanga Daioh excels in being a cute, humorous "slice of life" style story. This series...seems like it wants to be cute, humorous slice of life, but it's just waaaay too out there in too many ways to be funny (in fact, I'd go so far as to call it "un-funny"), relatable, or even cute.

Erittäin ennalta-arvaamatonta kohellusta, vaikea muutoin kuvata tätä kokemusta. Kiinnostavin hahmo on robottityttö, jonka selästä törrättää vieteriavain. Hänet rakentanut professori virittelee (lupaa kysymättä) tytön robottikehoon mitä kummallisempia ominaisuuksia, joista suurin osa liittyy ruokaan.

For a slice of life manga, this is more confusing than the average. Perhaps the jokes didn't translate well into English, but even so the characters and plots were so strange that I can't even comprehend what I just read.

I've been looking forward to reading this for a while, but I feel like it ended up falling flat for me. I read this while working an event, and the only reason I was able to understand this at all was because my coworker who was sitting next to me at the time had already read it and was able to explain things to me. I don't think it was bad, just confusing. The story follows a bunch of school kids as you see them go on various misadventures and navigate through school life. Its a purposely surreal and wonky story, with (mostly) normal characters, so it's an interesting mashup. I feel like I should have been able to pick up on the vibe of the story just by the cover alone, but I somehow managed to miss the obvious signs until I actually started reading and was immediately hit with something strange.

The jokes and gags itself were fine for the most part, although now, a month after I read the book, not many of them really stand out. I don't think I understood some of the non-visual jokes, although that might be partially because of translation, which is understandable. But even then, some of the more obvious jokes were a bit weird to me. For example, I didn't really understand the whole joke with the Buddha and everything with the school counselor, but at least the "Buddhit looks like I was wrong" pun was good? I mean, even if not every joke landed, I could still appreciate the book.

To be fair there were some parts I did really like. My favorite reoccurring gag was between Koujirou and Misato where she would constantly pull out various guns and shoot him, only for him to be immediately cleaned up by his butler. I don't know why I liked those parts of the book so much- maybe it's because it was so random and how none of the characters acted like nothing had happened, or maybe it was because each time Misato shot Koujirou she pulled out an even more ridiculous weapon. Honestly, I think Koujirou was my favorite character simply because of how ridiculous he was and theatrical he was. The chapters he was in were some of the better ones, in my opinion, and honestly, he's the only character that I really feel any sort of connection to and the only one I would be interested of seeing more of. Another part I particularly enjoyed was the scene where the principal was having a faceoff against the deer. Again, this was a gag that was pretty dependent on the art itself, so it couldn't really be lost in translation. I liked the fight and the fact that the principal (as well as Koujirou) seemed to be an immortal, constantly healing god.

Speaking of characters, I found it quite difficult to differentiate between the characters. With the exception of maybe the main characters, a lot of the secondary characters seemed to blend together. I feel like a lot of them were visually too similar to be able to be told apart, and especially how half of the characters aren't even given names in this book, it made it even harder to figure out who was who. For example, it took me quite a while to even realize that Yuuko and Misato were different people. Maybe that was obvious to some, but seeing as in this I couldn't really depend on things like hair color to tell people apart, it made everyone blend together. To be fair, the only reason I'm even able to put names to faces in this review was because I used the wiki. I couldn't really rely on the book to do it, and this is part of the reason I don't know if I can continue the series- I think I would be even more confused as more people are introduced.

Overall, I don't think I can describe this book as anything other than fine. It didn't really stand out, and there were parts I didn't get, but it wasn't awful. It had it's fun moments, and I can see why people might really like this series, but I don't know if this is the series for me. I don't regret trying it out, and I did mean to read this quite a while ago, but I'm glad I crossed it off my list, even if I don't end up continuing on with it in the future. The thing with manga is that most of them are such a light read that even if I didn't love it, it was over so quickly that I can't give it a low rating. But even if it was a long read, I still don't think it would have been that awful.
