Beautiful and creative stories documenting Kingston's experiences as a Chinese-American girl with Chinese parents.

A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe - 5/5

I think Kingston deserves to be more widely read than she currently is.

All throughout this book Kingston tries to make sense of what is real and what is fantasy, each chapter being focused on different women protagonists and stories was really interesting. Lots of themes of American versus Chinese culture, family, mother-daughter relationships, and feminism.

This is a wonderful book I would have never known had I not been assigned to read it during a women's studies course. It tells the beautiful story of a Chinese myth which may have also been the inspiration for Disney's "Mulan".
