I found it intriguing but hard to get through at times.
I liked this book, and it gave great insight to Asian American woman during the 70/80 time period. But it wasn’t the best page turner I’ve ever read.
Some of my favourite quotes:
"Chinese-Americans, when you try to understand what things in you are Chinese, how do you separate what is peculiar to childhood, to poverty, insanities, one family, your mother who marked your growing with stories, from what is Chinese? What is Chinese tradition and what is the movies?" (5-6)
"Even if she had to rage across all China, a swordswoman got even with anybody who hurt her family. Perhaps women were once so dangerous that they had to have their feet bound." (19)
"She said I would grow up a wife and a slave, but she taught me the song of the warrior woman, Fa Mu Lan. I would have to grow up a warrior woman." (20)
"I do not believe in old age. I do not believe in getting tired." (104)

There were parts of this book I really really loved, especially the way she was able to combine ancient mythology with the modern day. I also liked the way she explored intricacies in family relationships, with Brave and Moon Orchid. The last chapter threw me, though, because it seemed reminiscent of my teenage days with an uncritical acceptance of American/ghost culture.

The first few stories were strong but just when I got invested it would change to another short story. I Wish that the stories were more in-depth because that really threw me off and I think I started losing interest in the stories the more I read.
Pretty writing but I did not feel a connection to these Chinese elements as it went because I think the author grouped a lot of these depressing characteristics she experienced through her family together.
