This is an excellent novel. It confused me a lot at first, having to discern between reality and fantasy, but once I got in to it I liked it. I appreciate when memoir author’s put a creative spin on their storytelling and this did just that — all while honoring Kingston’s culture and family history.

I felt a lot of emotion while reading this novel and am glad it was recommended to me. I read it twice.

A monumental piece in Asian American literature, The Woman Warrior playfully blends Chinese mythologies and childhood narratives to reveal the gender, class, and intergenerational conflicts that mark the Chinese-American immigrant identity. Though published in 1976, the book remains empowering for challenging the traditional stereotypes and expectations set for Chinese-American women. My favorite pieces from the collection were No Name Women and White Tigers for how they interweave truth and fantasy to produce moving depictions of intergenerational trauma in the first, and female rebellion in the latter.

Wow. Beautifully written, engaging, and emotionally compelling. I particularly loved the fantasy sections.

read for class! i liked this :) it didn’t feel like a memoir at all, which was really interesting. the mythology aspects were so cool, and the writing was very engaging, it reminded me a lot of bestiary by k ming chang !!!
