reading things for school severely dampens any sense of if i actually enjoyed it or not

Enjoyable glimpse into Chinese culture.

I found this book confusing and tedious.

There were parts I loved and really related to but as a whole, I can't say I enjoyed this read. I tend to like more straightforward memoirs.

I have no idea how to categorize this book, beyond biography/memoir, but even that isn't quite accurate. The story is built on memory, yes, but memory heavily infused with myth, magic, dreams, "talk-story," and the stories of family members. I could categorize it under myth, under fiction AND nonfiction, under world lit--it defies labels. This is a magical book.

Update 2023: with time and literary growth, I now understand how beautiful this book is. Interweaving chinese folklore with family history and what it means to be a person of two cultures, pulled between yearning for autonomy and the need to obey. Its been nearly 20yrs since I first read this, I'm so glad I decided to give it another try now that my worldview has grown. I felt like I was reading it for the first time!

Outdated review:"2-stars.  I've had to read this for two different classes. It didn't really captivate me."
