Complex interweaving of history and legend, family history and personal aspirations. A feminist liberationist memoir about the Chinese-American (and immigrant) experience. Profound and moving.

An interesting collection of stories of Chinese folk tales and myths mixed with the author's childhood experiences as a Chinese American. I enjoyed the beautiful and descriptive way Kingston told the old myths, but my favorite parts were the stories involving Kingston's mother, who not only told the best stories but has a strong personality that shines through in each one. From battling ghosts in her medical school dorm to bullying her sister into fighting for her place as the first wife in her husband's home, I couldn't stop reading these hilarious anecdotes. Not all stories are page turners, but there are quite a few that are.

More like 3.5 stars. I felt like it just kind of ended. But there is a lot to admire about this portrait of mother-daughter relationships, intergenerational trauma, immigration/assimilation, and folklore. I can see why this is still regarded as a creative nonfiction classic because it is inventive in terms of form, imagined material, and point-of-view.
