This is a classic book. I went in understanding the premise but expecting a ya book that skirts around the edges of darker topics. For the most part it doesn't. Also the writing is so beautiful, and I cried at the end!

I’m a sucker for WWII historical fiction and this one was good. I liked that it was from the POV of Death and his commentary on humanity and war was poignant.

It was just a tad too slow side for me though.

Beautifully heartbreaking.
As you follow the story of Liesel ("the book thief"), you slowly realize every horror the Holocaust caused, including to the German population. The poverty, the obligation to follow the rules set by Hitler, not knowing what exactly is happening, the helplessness. But also trying to make the best of what they had and living in the moment.

The use of death as a narrator scared me at first, as it seemed like an almost cliche trope that could easily go wrong. Yet, it surprisingly works.

I have never cried while reading a book before, but this got me. I cried and this book will forever be in my heart. I, myself, am "Jewish Blood" and it breaks my heart reading this story about Liesel. I definitely recommend to anyone.
