Skinwalkers, vampires, were-leopards, and...pirates? A relic of Jean Lafitte's gang makes an appearance. Being a pirate, he has nefarious motives. Unfortunately, they involve Jane's best friend, not something he should have done. Pirates zero, Jane Yellowrock one.

I got pulled quickly back into Jane/Beast's story once more, this time with the addition of Big Evan in a desperate quest to find the missing Molly. I tore through this book in two nights and enjoyed the heck out of it. Glad Rick is out of the picture (seriously, Rick, go away), loving Jane's continued connection to Molly's kids and her own "brothers" Eli and the Kid, and eager for the next installment.

This story builds on previous books in the series, so you do need to read in order.

Black Arts is a fast-paced action-packed adventure. It starts with a bang and doesn’t stop. It ties up unfinished business and gives us answers on numerous things we have been waiting for.

Jane’s life is finally making sense. Those around her finally know her heritage and abilities. It’s liberating for Jane. The only downside is she is still estranged from her best friend Molly and her family, but then again that rift is about to be slowly mended.

Jane and Beast are more in-since with each other, but they still have a ways to go, yet some things get resolved between them. It was fabulous to have Molly and her family back in the picture. The Younger brothers are great for Jane and add to the story. Leo, well he’s Leo. George, things are changing for him too. Jane’s love life or whatever it is gets some resolution. I have to say, I cried for Jane. Rick is an ass and I never liked him, but what happens is devastating. Though I have to say I’m hoping he is gone for good. As I’ve said from the get go Jane needs someone who will put her first, stand by her, and love her for who she is.

Black Arts is an emotional read, a roller coaster ride, and a wonderful story blending action, romance, magic, and history.

One of the best books in the series. Jane takes charge, she is powerful and strong, and she finally (!) stops agonizing with guilt and gets the job done. Yay! I’m still upset about the Bruiser situation although he was much less unbearable in this book. I can’t help but root for Rick but I don’t see that happening. Other than that, well done. Yay.

Evan Trueblood calls on Jane for help when his wife and her best friend, Molly, disappears without a trace. It is soon revealed that something strange and untoward is going on when two of Katie’s ladies also vanish and a number of newly risen vampires die under mysterious circumstances. Add into the equation an attempt on Jane’s life and the appearance of a new rival to Leo’s control of the city of New Orleans and Jane has her hands full.

Series note: The plot of this installment is directly connected to events in book #2 Blood Cross. As such, it is highly recommended that the books be read in order for the specific backstory as well as the developments in the overall story arc since then.

Let’s begin with the problems …
#1. Rick “the SOB” La Fleur. Can you tell that I despise him with every fiber of my being and it is incomprehensible to me that Jane would not only give him the time of day but actually grieve when he betrays her once again! When is she going to realize that Bruiser is a far more worthy option! *Sigh*

#2. Molly Everhart Trueblood - after her actions in the last couple of books, I find it difficult to care one way or the other that she is missing and whether or not she is found.

#3. The overtly religious elements in the story are inappropriate in this genre. If I were interested in inspirational literature I would read it. As it stands, I dislike having religion shoved down my throat.

Now on to the good stuff...

#1. Jane and her Beast are fantastic and there are one or two truly wonderful moments between them that set the stage for the future of their partnership. That said, it would be great if Jane occasionally tapped into her Skinwalker abilities and shifted into other creatures as she did in the first couple of books.

#2. A couple of scenes between Leo and Jane makes reading this book an absolute must! The first left me shaking my head in incredulity while the second put a huge smile on my face.

#3. Bruiser - enough said!

All in all, an intriguing addition to the series and it will be interesting to see where Hunter goes from here with the European Council of Vampires coming to New Orleans. Moreover, one can only hope that we have seen the back of Rick the Scumbag and that Jane will finally come to her senses and jump Bruiser’s bones. Hope springs eternal…
