Waarschuwing: Verkrachting, pogingen daartoe, seksueel misbruik.
Dit boek begon nog best goed, 2 punk meiden besluiten om te reizen naar Italië, naar de zee, naar iets nieuws en spannends. Maar toen begonnen dingen al snel mis te gaan en ik zat vaak met een zware maag te lezen want ik kan gewoon niet tegen seksueel misbruik/verkrachtingen en dan was het ook best grafisch. In het begin vond ik de meiden nog wel stoer, dat ze dit durfden. Gewoon weggaan, gewoon het doen. Maar nu ik het hele boek heb gelezen. Edi was gewoon verschrikkelijk en manipulatief. Ulli was naïef en vervelend. Ik snap dat ze niet naar huis wilde, maar na zoveel verschrikkelijke dingen zou je toch zeggen dat ze wist dat het een kut idee was om met mannen mee naar huis te gaan? Of in een auto te stappen? Plus ik vond het gewoon sneu voor haar ouders die maanden niets van haar hoorden. De tekeningen vond ik wel mooi gedaan, en ook leuk dat er nog wat meer informatie was en ook foto's. Maar ja, ik was dus op een gegeven moment wel klaar met het boek. Goed begin, meh middelstuk, en nope einde.

Die Geschichte/Storyline ist gut, und sehr authentisch.
Manchmal war die Schrift in den Sprechblasen so klein, dass man sehr nah an die Seite musste. Als Ulli allein in Palermo unterwegs war und nur italienisch gesprochen hat, war das, was sie nicht verstanden hat/nicht wichtig war, sehr einfach mit dem tatsächlichen Text verwechselbar.
Wie sie mit der Tatsache umgeht, dass sie vergewaltigt wurde, finde ich für ihr Alter sehr gut, und auch, dass sie immer mehr auf der Reise lernt, Nein zu sagen und sich nicht alles gefallen lässt. Auch, dass sie es in Kauf nimmt, ohne Edi weiterzuziehen, weil sie sonst nicht alleine schlafen darf.
Kritisch fand ich auch, wie leicht manche Themen angesprochen wurden, nur weil Edi nicht schwanger werden kann, heißt das nicht, dass sie Sex bis zum Umfallen haben sollte. Generell fand ich den Charakter von Edi eher zweifelhaft. Sie lässt immer Ulli die Arbeit machen -nach Essen fragen, betteln, Autos anhalten-, hilft nicht, als Ulli ihre Hilfe gebraucht hätte, um sich Männer vom Hals zu halten, überredet Ulli förmlich zu Heroin usw.
Natürlich ist diese Reise ein wichtiger Punkt in der Charakterbildung von Ulli Lust gewesen, aber meiner Meinung nach, hätten manche Ereignisse anders dargestellt werden müssen.

This book is a perfect example of why we need more women in comics, telling stories that are honest, unflinching, accessible, and important. Absolutely.
I've traveled in some pretty remote places and have a handful of bizarre stories and experiences, but as a white dude I can concede that those stories don't amount to anything particularly traumatic, and I would argue that a lot of travel literature is in this vein; white dude goes to foreign country, has some wacky but generally harmless adventures, ends up having some introspective thoughts about himself and maybe (hopefully) some compassion for people of other countries, writes and publishes a book.
Lust's experiences, on the other hand, traveling by herself in a relatively tame country as a young female living penny to penny were completely eye-opening and raw. The assault and trauma that she endured and prevailed over also shed light on Italian culture, politics, gender roles, and history. I don't think I'll ever think of Italy in the same way again.
This fact, combined with the amazing skill in Lust's simple yet dynamic drawings, make for one of the most important and effective graphic novels I've read.

Memorable and powerful story with evocative drawings. The graphic novel is well-suited to this kind of story, it helps bring out nuances without having to write in plain text.

oke ik snap celien haar review nu wtf ik haat mannen zo hard hierdoor... wel geweldig interessante autobiografische weergave van een Oostenrijks punk meisje, met hele vlotte illustraties. Stevig boek, maar las als een trein!

An intense, compelling examination of the time the author spent bumming around Europe as a teenage punk, the relationships she made, the experiences she went through, and the many, many men who would not take no for an answer.
Sad at parts, exciting at others, it is a window into a different time and a different life, which is well worth examining.
