I really, really wish I'd read this before seeing the TV show. I loved the story and the way Tevis writes (why have I never read anything by him before - get thee to a library woman!). He writes believable women well, he even managed it in the middle of the 1980s.
It's not a big novel but it's packed full, small font with narrow margins give you dense text. I was slightly put off on seeing this but glad as once I started reading I didn't want to stop. The more words the better!
The story rollocks along as Beth drinks and drugs her way around a chess board. The play itself is never boring, I assume it's factually correct but my chess ability has not matured since I was a very untalented member of the primary school club.

A joy to read from front to back. Whether you know chess or not, I would highly recommend this book. Loved it.
First book I finished in a while. I really wanna play chess now.

Honestly had never gave much thought about chess but this put it in a new light.
This book shed a light on the time period and the complexities of families during that times.
Unsure if I’ve ever said this but watching the series actually seemed helpful in envisioning the book as I read, especially in complex paragraphs that were chess heavy.

This books was both excellent and monumentally disappointing. I love books about chess. I don’t play but I love the intrigue and strategy. I picked this up after seeing the ads for the Netflix series I haven’t watched. This was also the story of a genius those are fun too and a sort of rags to riches but that was where it fell short. The true poverty in the main character’s life was not in money but in the things that truly matter; family, friendships and experiences. Beth has only one consuming experience and that is chess. She even has a brush with faith and religion but she brushes them off as fake compared to her religion of chess. As the story ends one wonders, skeptically if the experience of chess will continue to satisfy in the face of all her other deficits. Also the sexual content was anomalistically base and even criminal. It reminded me of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo. I never felt like Lisbeth would feel the deficit of her life choices but I think Beth in this book will.
