Such an amazing book. I came across the Queen’s Gambit in the library in the 1990s, and it was a true discovery. I’ve reread it every few years since then, and it always takes me on an amazing journey. A modern classic.
I loved this! Who would have thought chess would keep me on the edge of my seat? There were quite a few loose ends that I would've liked to see how they turned out, but in a way I was okay with it because it really drove home that this story was just about Beth and chess.

I didn’t appreciate the male author portraying child sexual assault as sexy.
Graphic: Child abuse, Sexual assault
The way sex is talked about in this book made me very uncomfortable. I don't think the author of this book researched as much into how a woman would feel, think about, or talk about sex. After the main character is raped by her childhood friend, I checked if this was written by a woman and found that it is not. I also don't think the point of view of someone with addiction is portrayed correctly.

I was thinking of rewatching the show and thought I would read the book instead. Very enjoyable experience and just very satisfying in the same way as Carrie Soto is Back for example. The show follows the book very closely, but I do think the show does a much better job of the actual human relationships.
Also why does every guy she has sex with later in the book meet her when she's like 14, it was really not necessary.

It's one of those rare moments where the TV series adaptation is better than the book.
I was quite traumatised after reading this, only got a couple of pages in before I started to skim through the text, because I couldn't handle the overt and repeated sexual explotation of an 8/9 year old character. Like there was a strange fascination with underage sex+sa?? There were also bits of racism and that just didn't sit well with my soul. Distasteful doesn't even begin to describe it and one star is already too much for this disgusting excuse of a “book”... racial slurs and child sexual abuse, just how far can one go to humiliate women and poc??? The book was honestly gross, truly not what I was looking for..

I hate chess but this book was great. I watched the series before so no surprises and the show didn't change a thing but it was still fun to read.
