Read this because I want to watch the HBO show [movie?]. Pretty good - not sure that anyone not somewhat interested in chess would find it that interesting.

3.5*

There are two main characters in this book: [1] Beth Harmon and [2] the world of chess. The remaining characters in the book are fairly minor and mostly serve to aid her (or, sometimes, hinder her) in her quest to be the best at chess. So this book is much more a chess-oriented story than it is a character-driven drama.

Beth discovers chess at age eight. It is quickly established that she is a chess prodigy – and she has a passion for the game. The book then follows her for the next 11 years as she ascends up through the world of competitive (and later, hyper-competitive) chess. Her ascendancy is not smooth or steady. All of that was what the Amazon book description suggested, and that was indeed what the book delivered.

The books references many different classic chess openings (e.g., Ruy Lopez, Sicilian Defense, Caro-Kann). I’ve played a fair amount of chess and have read a few books on chess strategy, so such references added a sense of realism to the story. But despite the elements of chess-oriented drama in the book, you get the impression you know how the story will end long before you reach the end.

For readers who know and like chess, they should find the book to be an entertaining chess-with-some-drama story. For readers with much less familiarity with chess, they may find the book to be too little drama and too much chess.

Amazing book. Phenomenally written.
