The Water Outlaws

This was a slow start for me, I spent most of the beginning waiting for something to happen, but once the story gets rolling it doesn’t stop. I loved all the different characters and getting to see the ways people’s minds are bent

For this month I was reading and watching several books for AAPI month, saw this gorgeous cover and dove in. It is an epic tale of outlaws taking on an empire that has, like all civilizations, turner to greed and power to rule instead of with generosity and compassion… so they form a tribe, mostly women, that take back, and give, sort of like a bunch of Robin Hoods I guess. My only misgivings with this book is it’s length. And I couldn’t beat the crap out of the bad men in real life…

I was enjoying it, but I've been too busy. I'll finish it when life slows down.

The discursive tension arises from the differences between the heroes and the savagery of some of their choices. Lin Chong is undoubtedly the most rounded character with Lu Junyi characterisation (and plot) sadly underwhelming. A few too many contrivances and a bit too much over explaining gets in the way of a mostly well written adventure. For all the talk of Empire and Emporer I'm not sure the text does enough to draw out interesting questions about it and the ideology and systems of oppression it brings to bear. A bit underwhelming if I'm honest and too long (?)

4 or 4.5. Really solid, full of cool characters and LGBT rep. I am obsessed with Lu Da. Everything that stopped it from being a 5 is fully a matter of personal taste in terms of length and prose.

This is a sweeping tale, full of both wonderful and repugnant characters, with multiple layers to the story. Political intrigue, social and sexist hierarchies, scientific research, and a fascinating band of outlaws crash together into a great drama. This is a fast-paced and exciting read. Despite how much the story it takes on, it very much delivers!
