Initially really enjoyed this, but seemed to drag on eternally. Just felt like a chore to pick up after a while, the only thing that kept me going was that I really wanted to know how it ended, but not even that could drown out the boredom I felt.

the prose ran away from plot, characterization, intimacy, and emotional arcs faster than usain bolt. the first and very last few chapters of this experimental novel were borderline fantastic, but sadly, not enough to rescue the massive collision of bored incongruency that was the whole middle. i have yet to read the other finalists, but i'm in disbelief how this novel beat out its contenders for national award in fiction. maybe the others were written by longhand in the dark?

The strangest ‘coming of age’ story I’ve ever read.
Tess Gunty has a beautiful way with words and this weird, oddly specific way of connecting lines that you wouldn’t expect to connect , but by the end of this book, I was just done with it.
Couldn’t really connect to any of the characters in a meaningful way and struggled at times on the plot lines that seemed to have no final destination in mind.
Really enjoyed the non-linear, everyone connected to this one apartment building structure in the beginning but it definitely lost its charm pretty fast.

Weird book. Can’t say I’d recommend it. Seemed a bit disjointed and was hard to follow. An book influencer I like recommended it…. hmmm I’m skeptical of her other suggestions now.
