What an amazing graphic novel. I loved the characters and the strong personalities. I loved the purposefulness of the frames. I loved the arc of the main character and her coming to terms with her sexuality but also coming to a place where she can still explore. It was so nice to see more complex familiar relationships - especially with her father.

I absolutely loved everything about this. The writer and artist nailed what 2004 and being a teen in that era was like. Super relatable. And, ugh, just everything. Love love love.

one star off for being just a little bit too set in 2004 but otherwise this was very good for what it was

I think the fact that this is written by a straight author shows (like the dad situation was upsetting enough that i wish we had a more direct accountability from him) but the realism in letting her actually lose friendships is so painfully real to being gay in conservative areas…so extra 0.5 stars for that. a lot of YA novels will try to resolve even the worst friendship problems when sometimes the best thing is to move on.

3.5 I loved the artwork and the black and white was a nice touch. Each character’s movement and emotion was captured wonderfully. The setting being in 2004 threw me off a little, I get why it’s set then after reading the author/illustrator interview, but as a former teenager during that time, some of the tech and text usage seemed off. I liked seeing Amanda come of age and discover her sexuality and the plot about her discovering who her grandfather was paralleled nicely with what she was going through. Her friends super sucked, though Amanda didn’t make some great decisions either. I can see this being a popular LGBTQ+ title, but the time period will probably go over most current teens’ heads.

I want more books like this
