This book seems less like three previous books. Written almost add a documentary, the style is very different. I suppose this book had to choose the narrative gap between halo 3 and halo 4, and cover a lot of back story - there origin of the flood, the halos, the ark, the Prometheans, and what ultimately happened to the forerunners.

It also explains how the Didact, one of the greatest forerunner heroes, became the villain of halo 4.

It seems the book was written in a hurry to hit a deadline, not allowing it to be fully fleshed out.

It is ultimately a tragedy, much like the fall of reach. The story is a history, so we already know how it will end, but there are still some lose ends left to ponder on.
