A fun listen, well written as always with this author. Liked both Saul and Randolph, and would happily continue with the series. Points only lost for the length of time the MCs spent stuck in the trap, it seemed to go on forever.

Saul Lazenby is a disgraced archeologist who served time for a war crime during the recent WWI. Back in England, disowned by his family, he struggled to support himself. The only job he is able to secure is as a personal assistant to a batty old major who believes in fairy stories and keeps sending Saul off to various parts of London to investigate supposedly occult sites. Saul knows it's all fake but he keeps investigating anyway... and then a tree bursts in flames in front of him. And a mysterious gentleman keeps showing up at the same sites of sacred groves or ancient wells which Saul's been sent to look at. That gentleman is Richard Glide, who just happens to be the heir to one of the oldest arcane families in England. And he can't tell if Saul is causing the spiritual problems that keep occurring around him or if it's all an unlikely coincidence. This historical romance is a fun and quick read, shorter than most of the KJ Charles books I've read before. Be warned, the end sets up a sequel which has not, and may not, ever actually come out- but I still enjoyed this one on it's own.

"Do you always speak in double talk?" / "Habitually. It's terribly vulgar to say what one means."

Sooooooo many things I like in a good romance. The structure of this one differed a bit from what I'm used to, and specifically what I'm used to in a K.J. Charles novel, but I really enjoyed it. Opposites attract in wartime, except it's a clandestine kind of post-war, a war that only one of them is aware of. I was delighted at the connection to Simon Feximal, which I loved, and the world-building and magic was once again very different from anything I've seen before, and very interesting because of it. I adoooooooored Saul and Randolph, and they were so good together.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Ruari Carter, and liked it a lot. He has a different sort of voice, but I liked the... idk, scratchiness of it, and his voices for the characters were really fitting.

Good stuff, as usual.
