Rereading/restarting a series I read in middle school. Very fun, very light and easy reading. A good break from heavier books. Do enjoy the ability of Horowitz to write suspenseful scenes.
Alex is an orphan. And at the beginning of Stormbreaker, he gets orphaned again when his uncle and guardian dies suddenly in an accident. But was it an accident? Alex soon discovers that his uncle was no mere bank manager, but he was a spy for M16, a top secret spy agency. Alex is recruited to take up where his uncle left off.
This story is completely silly and "borrows" a bit too much from Batman (Mr. Grin with scars on his cheeks... really?) and James Bond, but it's all in good fun and full of gadgets and high-tech chases and solutions galore. Reminds me of watching Inspector Gadget.

I chose to start this series because (1) most of the audiobooks (not this one) are narrated by my audiobook boyfriend Simon Prebble and (2) I like Anthony Horowitz's adult books.
This is most definitely not a series for adults. It is clearly aimed at teens and with the hope of becoming a long-running movie or television series. (Stormbreaker came out as a movie in 2006 and in 2020 a new TV series debuted.)
The premise is ridiculous - the English government sending an orphaned teenager into a dangerous situation as a spy after the people he is to spy on murdered his spy uncle! And everything Alex does is over the top. Very James Bond-esque (which the author acknowledges by calling Alex double-0-nothing during this training). The villains are all very villain-y, with various foreign accents. This series might appeal to a reluctant male reader who would like to imagine himself or herself as a teenaged spy.
The librarian not only tells Alex what his uncle was researching, she gives him the title of a book he was reading! Not cool.
Still, I am sure I will enjoy listening to every other book in the series as narrated by Simon Prebble. I have already requested Point Blank.

re-read thoughts: it's still a good book although obviously aimed at a younger audience. I had to resuspend my belief in several parts but otherwise the book was a fun introduction to the alex rider world. Look forward to re-reading rhe rest.
