Hmm. Efficient rather than compelling. My 9yo has gone through seven of them in two weeks so clearly Horowitz is doing something very right. But I'm uneasy with the stereotypical treatment of race - the villain is a thinly disguised Al Fayed caricature, for example.

This book is kind-of like books I've read, it's just this one didn't hit right. Maybe if read it at a different time, when I don't have as many books I want to read, I'll like it better.

So-so...very unrealistic. Very hard to imagine a 14 year old in some of these situations that he has been in. I think Spy School is a much better series. I might push through and read the second book. Spy school has more complex vocabulary. He seems more like your average 14 year as compared to Alex.
