I used to be OBSESSD with this series as a kid, and I even read this book in Welsh! Haha I was such a nerd (still am) and I actually really want to reread this book to give me all those nostalgic childhood memories. This is fun, fast paced and badass and I would definitely recommend for kids aged 10-13!

It's ok, not terrible. It reads like a publisher told someone to write James Bond for the teen market, which means that the pacing is fine but in the end comes off feeling too paint-by-numbers. The bad guys, in particular, were dishearteningly cliched. Other reviews have noted the sexism and brand name obsessions, which passed me by to be honest. Not something I'd give to my son to read, there are better books out there.

Another audiobook from our spring break trip. Lots of fun playing on James Bond tropes (though the villian sadly did not have a cat), though this was not relevant to the younger members of our audience. An action-packed and somewhat violent adventure (people die, though not directly at the hands of our teenage hero)in which our hero is constantly in peril but scrapes his way out in a variety of literally incredible (but enjoyable) ways.

While reading, I kept thinking I'm 20 years too late to enjoy this book. But the funny thing is I checked the publication date after finishing, and it's 2000!
I'd have loved the book as a 7 years old haha...

2.5 - 3 stars. It was fun to listen to in the car and not very demanding, but so ridiculous in places I could not help but cringe.. I suppose it did not help that it is written for children half my age... hahhaaha

Stormbreaker is the first book in the Alex Rider series and it does not disappoint. I first read this when I was 10 but quickly was rereading and rereading. Not my favourite of the series but definitely a great start. The short length of the book is also good in motivating more difficult readers. You're missing out if you don't read some Anthony Horowitz.

GENRE: Fiction, adventure/thriller.

SUMMARY: Fourteen-year-old Alex Rider was raised by his uncle, Ian, and they were fairly close. So when Alex is told that his uncle died in a car collusion as a result of not wearing a seat belt, Alex knows that something is amiss. His suspicions are confirmed shortly after the funeral, when he learns that Ian was actually a spy. To further throw Alex's life into a tailspin, his uncle's employers want to send Alex to the location Ian was investigating. Alex seems to be a natural spy, and does his best to get to the bottom of what is really happening at Sayle Enterprises.

EVALUATION: This type of book is not normally my style, though Stormbreaker kept me entertained throughout the course of Alex's adventure. The villains are typical, and none of those characters surprised me, though the motive for Herrod Sayle's evilness seemed a bit far fetched. I liked that even the supposed 'good guys', Ian Rider's employers, were at best neutral and largely self serving. In the end, Alex must rely on himself and the handful of spy gadgets he was given.

WHY I WOULD INCLUDE IT: The action never lets up, making for an entertaining ride. This is the first in a series of Alex Rider adventures, all of which are popular. I suspect that tween boys would especially like this title, for the idea of a tween as a spy of this level is intriguing. The Hardy Boys have nothing on Alex!

READER'S ANNOTATION: Fourteen-year-old Alex Rider is quickly thrust into the life of a spy after his caretaker uncle is mysteriously killed.
