The first book in the Alex Rider series definitely starts off with a kick!
I love how hesitant Alex is about dipping his feet into this new world and how despite going through some intense and stressful situations he retains his sarcasm and sense of humor, and he could definitely win against anybody in a battle of wits. I loved his training, the devices he used and how he used them in addition to his own abilities and curiosity to know. He went beyond what was needed every time and kept us constantly on the edge.
As for the writing style, Anthony Horowitz has always been able to keep me on the hook with his amazing pace and the plot line of course. It's a book I read in one sitting and I believe anyone else would too :)

Genuinely such a refreshing/fun read!!! Gave me so much happy nostalgia for the books I read growing up— middle grade sci-fi writing with so many elements of humor and social commentary as well. I generally dislike first books in spy style series for the training montage parts, but thankfully that didn’t take up a lot of this book. The antagonist was. Uh. Interesting, Horowitz. But the last few pages!!!!!! 4 stars 4 a fun time.
this was good! i like it a lot better then the others!
As the first book of this awesome series, Stormbreaker starts out perfectly. You will soon find yourself addicted and rooting for Alex Rider through all of his adventures. Perfect for any boy or girl who loves spy novels and is a fan of James Bond. Exciting, page-turning, and gripping are perfect words to describe this series.
I liked this book, I just. . . it was nothing special. It was a whirlwind ride that I really enjoyed while I was on, but at the end of the day it just felt like another teen spy saves the world story. Still, I would definitely recommend this book to someone slightly younger.

Goodreads Synopsis:
In the first book in the number one bestselling Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz, fourteen-year-old Alex is forcibly recruited into MI6. Armed with secret gadgets, he is sent to investigate Herod Sayle, a man who is offering state-of-the-art Stormbreaker computers to every school in the country. But the teenage spy soon finds himself in mortal danger.|
Plot
Firstly, I realise that as a 26 year old mother, I am not the target audience to this book. That being said, I did enjoy the read. It's a quick read, full of tension and action. The plot was really well thought out and it was easy to see how Stormbreaker would be so popular.
Characters & Dynamics
Alex is a savvy quick-thinker that got through Stormbreaker alive based on talent, training, and luck. He was easy to root for but it was a bit too contrived for me to believe that a 14 year old would be able to accomplish the things that Alex did, but definitely does make a good book.
Writing
Horowitz writing is fast-paced and fun to read. The ideas that came to him for the writing of Stormbreaker were inspiring.
World Building
I really enjoyed the part of the story where Alex completes a couple of weeks training and the tough blokes he had to endure it with as they sneered at him. I liked the bonding part as Alex did not really develop relationships with any one else in the story.
Likes
- The fast pace
- The plot
Dislikes
- Bit contrived
- Alex doesn't really create and relationships in the story
Final Thoughts
This book was a family buddy read (hence the reading it without being its target audience) and regardless of my age I have tried to review it as fairly as possible.
