This is a big comfort read for me. I still have my battered up copy from high school!

I love this book. I try not to give many 5 stars because I feel like a book really has to be something awesome in order to get the best of the best and this book has it. The characters are believable and endearing. The story deals with heavier issues (borderline abusive parental relationships/physical deformities) in a real way. The port-wine stain that covers her face is the tool used to write a book that is truly based on family relationships in all of their complexity.

All of the characters are dynamic and most achieve significant growth throughout the novel. My favorite of these would be Terra's mother. She begins as a very overweight, submissive, spineless person. She refuses to stand up to her husband and seems unable to come out of the shadows. However in the story she has moments where she comes into her own and reclaims her identity.

I love this book, I haven't bought it yet but I will as soon as I have the cash (poor, starving college student remember) go and read it, it really is amazing.

As I started to read this book I started to wonder how it was possible to start liking this book, but what an amazing book! As soon as I finished, I wanted to read it again! Spoiler***** being almost run over. What a cool entrance for. Character???? I must say I love jacob's character above everyone else's.

There is a lot of references and discussions of maps in this book. LOTS. Maybe too many. And I LIKE maps!
Anyway, Terra has a port wine stain on her face. She also has an emotionally abusive father and an eager to please mother. Terra has a popular jock boyfriend (of course! Typical YA Romance Plot Construction) who is nice to her, but doesn't really get her. One winter, Terra meets Jacob who is cool and edgy and goes get her. Then they go to China.
This romance was better than some, but not as good as others. Terra is a sympathetic character, but the map metaphors and some cliched side characters got a little clunky for a full recommendation.

I read this book over a year ago, and I still find myself thinking about it constantly.

This book is beautiful all around, and I'm really curious as to how i don't know a single soul who's read this book. I love it. I love it. I love it.

My first 5 star teen read of 2009. Just put down whatever you are reading now, and pick this one up. I loved it.

This was a reread for me. I first gave this a 4 star rating, and after a second read years later- I'm bumping it up to a 5- which is not usually how rating go for me after rereading. It has such an amazing mother-daughter journey, reflection on what true beauty is, and emotional abuse.
