This book is simply marvelous. I have to admit that throughout the first 60 pages I've thought of putting it down but you've got to keep going. Truly amazing book.
This romantic contemporary with serious undertones is a good fit for fans of Sarah Dessen.
Overall I enjoyed it, though it was definitely slow and I often found myself lacking motivation. I was never quite bored, but never quite engaged either. In the end it was a good character-based novel with beautiful character development. The plot was just a bit lacking for my taste.

This book was great. I read it for the first time years ago in High School and remember just blowing through it. The characters were very much like my classmates and I thought that the cartography references added another level to the already wonderful prose. I've read some bad reviews about that long-running metaphor but it was so different and she did it so well... I just loved it! I think I may have liked it even more had Jacob not been a goth kind, but it makes sense - showing the contrast between her light and his "dark". Also, I was very impressed with the literary undertones thoughout the whole book. This is one of those I could really dig apart and come up with whole new meanings.
Overall, great book! Totally recommend.

This book is worth reading. It's not really a romance book that will make you swoon, but more on how you appreciate the beauty that lies within us and learn how to stood up for yourself.
Terra is an artistic girl. She's blond and tall but her port-swine spot on her cheek makes her noticeable that some people laugh or bully her which makes her down. Just like her brothers, she just want to be away and go to college of her choice, away from his father who doesn't get tired of mocking or controlling his family of what he want them to be.
While reading this, I can't help but feel angry toward his father. He's annoying. Really annoying and crazy. The way his words come out of his mouth truly hurts Terra and her mom. They just take his hurtful comments that they don't stood up for themselves.
What I really love in this novel is Jacob.
Everyone will love his character because he is a guy that doesn't judge a girl by the looks, but by the inner beauty. His feelings/attraction towards Terra is real and appreciates her of who she is. He's also the type of guy you will be comfortable to talk with in any sense.
This book reminds me of the song Beautiful by Christina Aguilera
The message of this book just simply implies:
"We are beautiful, No matter what they say
words won't bring us down.
We are beautiful in every single way, words can't bring us down."

Wow, this book truly blew me away, however that only happened in the later half of the book. I started reading this book way back in January, however I was so frustrated with many of the characters that i stopped reading. Now i'm glad I picked it up for my readathon and finished it.
This story speaks to the millions of women who feel insecure about themselves, who feel that they are "never good enough" and only want to gain the superficial beauty the media has been feeding down our throats these days. It also speaks to the women who have been always put down by a supposed loved one, who have been verbally abused and made fun of and made to believe that they are nothing and never will be anything or achieve anything great. As you can see this story touched my heart in a way other books didn't. I am a huge feminist and coming from a region where they aren't big on women's rights, you might see how this book affected me.
At first I was frustrated with Terra for never sticking up for herself and also for her mom for silently taking such verbal abuse and belittling from her supposed husband. It also frustrated me that Terra's two older brothers couldn't leave the house fast enough and were always on the sidelines watching, and never actually stopping their father, who has become more as a figure for everything they hated about their lives than an actual father.
When Terra and her mom met Jacob and his mom, their journey for the acceptance they always wanted and the realization that this all comes within themselves began. Terra was the fighter between the two. Her mom always stood behind her, as if the roles were reversed. Through this journey, which brought them all the way to China, Terra came to realize the true meaning of beauty and her mom saw herself as a person that is worthy to be loved, and accepted for who she is.
This book had me thinking so much, days after I finished it, I wished that I could become as strong as Terra was in the end. I wished that there is a way to reach out to women stuck in these situations, and for people to accept themselves and love themselves, because every single person is beautiful, you just need to look for the true beauty to see it. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a book with a deep message. However there is a romance element in this book, and while i crave for those in books in general, all i wanted to read about here is the journey of these two women, and where it would take them.

I picked this book off of a featured shelf in my local library. I must thank my librarian. North of Beautiful was MUCH better than I had anticipated. Justina Headley had a beautiful theme of cartography woven into the story line, and it worked. It worked really well. This wasn't just a young adult author trying to make a theme stand up throughout the plot - this was a lovely piece of fiction.
This was an amazing book on overcoming life's adversities! It was a touching and thought-provoking story.
Terra Rose Cooper was born with a port-wine stain birthmark along her entire cheek and spends her days trying to cover it up with heavy make-up and long hair...she also spends her time avoiding her verbally and emotionally abusive father. She thinks she's so lucky, though, to have found her boyfriend Erik, that he somehow thinks she's worth his time...though, he doesn't have a clue who she really is or what she really needs.
Taking a trip to Seattle with her mother they literally run into Jacob and his mother. And Terra and her mother's lives change forever.
Jacob was born with a cleft lip and has a scar to show for it...they soon find strength in each other's struggles. Jacob's mother also helps Terra's mother find her voice and her own strength as well.
It's a beautiful story, one that can inspire anyone who reads it and especially with the teen books out these days I feel this is a great one for young teens.
It was a little slow at the beginning and it was really hard to read about her jerk of a father and how they weren't dealing with it, but that has nothing to do with the awesome writing and the way Headley eventually wraps you up into the lives of Terra, Jacob and their mothers and how they all learn and grow and find their own beauty within.

A fabulous YA read. It was well-written, interesting, a little heavy on the obvious symbolism, but overall interesting and deep.
