Terra is nearly counting the days until she can escape her small Northwestern town and go to college a year early. She wants to escape her sad, trapped mother, and her nagging, nasty father, and she wants to move to a place where people don't know her as the girl with the port-wine stain. When Terra meets Jacob, a boy adopted from China when he was young, she finds an unexpected soulmate who understands what it means to be different. A trip with his mother and her mother to China allows them all to discover more about themselves and the true meaning of beautiful, and Terra figures out how to navigate her world.

Headley's novel is beautifully written and full of characters that have varying levels of depth. Readers will find themselves drawn to Jacob's warmth and frustrated by what a dick Terra's dad is. Others will root for her mother as she finds her inner-strength.

Although the pacing is slow, the story is compelling enough to see it through to the end. Some readers might bristle at the sheer number of references to cartography and directions, but for the most part, it works within Headley's larger framework.

An interesting read that will leave some readers wondering about the characters long after they finish the last page.

Another really fantastic book. This is about Terra, a girl with a huge birthmark on her face. She spends her entire life hiding the mark (mostly through makeup, but she tries and gets treatments done, too). It's basically the defining thing about her. Her family's totally disfunctional, too; they all tiptoe around her dad, who is basically a complete jerk who belittles everyone. (Although when other people are around, he acts like the world's nicest guy.)

Then she meets Jacob, who dresses like a goth. They like each other pretty much instantly, but it's not so much a boy-girl true love connection as it is the fact that they sort of recognize who the other person really is.

It's much better than I'm making it sound, but I'm sick, so give me a break. :)

This book has as great message. The writing was pretty good and I enjoyed the main characters. I did find quite a bit in the book cliche and predictable though. I'm still not sure whether I'd rate this book with 3 or 4 stars.

Every one needs to read this book. It is one hell of an eye-opener about the true meaning of beauty. Who are we to put a standard on beauty? How exactly do we know what is beautiful or not? This book will show us that there is beauty in everything if only we try to look deeply.

This book was pretty good.
Terra is beautiful- except for one thing. She was born with a portwine stain on her face, and has had to deal with the pain and social isolation ever since. As well as this, her father is verbally abusive, and her self esteem problems stretch through the roof. One mistake leads her to meeting Jacob- and together, they can work towards bettering their own problems.

Terra is perfect in many ways, but she has a flawed face, a birth mark on her cheek. To me she displayed inner beauty because she's smart, nice, compassionate and bares the pressure of judgmental people the biggest one: her dad. He doesn't support her and always outs her and her overweight mother down, when all her brothers left because of their dad, she became a main target.
She and her mother get in a accident with Jacob and her mother and they become fast friends which slowly turns into a romance. I loved Terra and Jacob, but Terra did one stupid thing: she didn't break up with her boyfriend before getting into a relationship with Jacob or tell Jacob she had a boyfriend in the first place.
The ending was good even though I wished for an epilogue.

I hated the dad... Terra is strong and brave and beautiful! I admire her bravery and the mom is great!I also loved the little romance :)
