finishing this book was a form of self harm. the only remotely real moment was when the 72 year old protagonist goes to the club and discovers the joy of techno. if you struggle with the confidence to become an author, this will help.

I love make believe as much as the next person, but this didn’t do it for me. I see how it was operating on all these levels, and understand that a lot of casual readers will enjoy this, but I didn’t find it particularly successful in any of motives. I unfortunately didn’t connect with any of the characters (why was she obsessed with calling that one guy stinky?), found the messaging to be too heavy-handed to all me to forget I was “learning,” didn’t find the message all that unique or interesting, and then the story just felt too bare bones. I love some magic and whimsy, but not like this. I didn’t love the Midnight Library but it is leagues above this one. I think I have to admit that perhaps this author is operating in a way that just isn’t for me.
