This book won’t be for everyone in part because I think it’s hard to pin down its exact genre. It’s some sort of speculative fiction but doesn’t fit neatly in sci-fi or magical realism, with a mix of magical water, portals, another planet, the ability to read people’s thoughts and see the future. There’s also a thread of anti-capitalism and saving the planet, all among an elderly woman trying to resolve her grief, some fresh and some decades old. But at its core, this book is an exploration of whether you’d want to have the power to know how the future plays out. Based on its narration style, this was a fast read. Matt Haig is always thought provoking in his books, and this one is no exception.

Such a departure from the Midnight Library

finishing this book was a form of self harm. the only remotely real moment was when the 72 year old protagonist goes to the club and discovers the joy of techno. if you struggle with the confidence to become an author, this will help.
