This book tried really hard to make the point that you should live in the moment… but it did it in such a pretentious word-salad way that I think that point doesn’t sink in. She has a life-changing experience on a beautiful island, but her experience is literally encountering an alien so like the idea of the mundane being really cool is kind of overshadowed by the fact that she met an alien.

Like it’s fine. But I got bored with it.

Well…I have mixed thoughts about this story. On one hand, I found it to be really beautiful. I liked the way Grace came to see life with joy and beauty I liked that she opened herself to friendship and understanding and forgiveness. On the other hand, how she found all of that openness, compassion, and empathy was strange. I think what the author is telling me is that seeing the joy and beauty in the everyday things is already within us. Having new experiences that you wouldn’t usually choose to have, finding compassion and empathy for yourself and others that you maybe didn’t open yourself to, all of that is within us as well.

You see what you want to see.
