The Life Impossible

I won this book in a giveaway. I was super pumped, I loved Midnight Library and some of his other books. After fighting with the publishers and goodreads for about 3 months, I finally got my free giveaway copy, 2 months after I was supposed to receive it.

Now for the actual book. This is about an old lady who touches some alien grass and it gives her super powers. I’m not kidding, that’s the premise. This book also has fun things like math and deforestation (?). The villain is so wild! Why would they care so much about something so frivolous?!

In short, this is a boring old math teacher placed into a fantastical situation and forced to face her grief all in the most boring ways possible.

I assume Matt Haig’s editors must’ve let him half too much freedom because there was a lot of repetition. It could’ve been maybe half the length.

This was such a let down.

I really loved the first half of this book, but after that I nearly DNF’d it. It starts out as a story about a senior woman trying to figure out the rest of her life after the loss of her husband and son. She meets some interesting folks and has a life changing, supernatural experience. But then it switches to a story about the woman and her new friends fighting an evil real estate mogul trying to build a new hotel. The ending was rushed and felt like a bad superhero vs. villain story.

I absolutely loved the way this book was written. Not only am I going on a magical journey with Grace, but it has so many beautiful descriptions of human life, connections, and grief. Many times I found myself reading a wonderfully written line and just taking a pause to exist in that thought. Such a unique read. I'd even consider reading this book again & again
