Another slow burner. Like Grace, you start out feeling a little bewildered by the tale she is following, but gradually come to an acceptance of the unbelievable becoming believable. The mysterious and magical combine with an ecological tale and ultimately dealing with letting go of grief and guilt. Beautiful.

If you are looking for a book with mystery, mystical features, and waves of profound dialogue, this book is for you.

This book will leave you pondering the simplicity and complexity of life all at the same time. Nothing is simple in the book and yet everything is.

This book is about leaning into our world, our thoughts, our beliefs, and finding the joy and wonder in the minuet.

The author was very clever in make the female protagonist a seventy-two-year-old woman who has spent the majority of her years in a grief so thick, she forgot how to live. She becomes the heroine of the story and more importantly, her life.

There were some parts that became a bit too sci-fi for me, but I really just ignored these detours to focus on the underlying theme of our world uniting us in its beauty and intrigue.

An email between a former pupil & a maths teacher, retelling the story of how a boring life full of grief turned around, in a bizarely magical way. Grace is 72, recently widowed, & forever mourning her son, who tragically died as a child. A woman she met years ago, only once, has recently died & somewhat unexpectedly left Grace her house in Ibiza; a place of more than just sunshine. Whilst trying to work out what happened to friend, mathematical, methodical Grace uncovers magic & mystery that challenges her entire belief & understanding of the world, bringing vibrancy back into her life. It’s surprising to me, because I’ve loved everything else Matt Haig has written, but this book just fell completely flat to me. There were some pretty moving sentences, that made me stop, feel & think, although I think being familiar with the authors own personal struggles helped. I honestly found myself quite bored through large parts of this book, or just not invested enough. I’m all for magical realism, fantasy etc, & I simply can’t put my finger on why specifically I didn’t like this, but, I just didn’t.
