honestly i wanted to give this a 3.75 bc i was so unsatisfied with the ending and was mostly confused upon finishing, despite generally enjoying (though not loving) the rest of the book, but it gave me so much to think about & interpret after reading that i had to bump it up. i dont think it's for me, ultimately, but it is a really well-written, thought-provoking book

A terribly sad book, but refreshing in that it doesn't shy away from grief and the fact that there isn't always a happy ending.

This was scary. It gave me chills at times.  It’s a story of possession and haunting. Be warned though that
the guy gets a dog and then the dog dies

This book is excellent. I absolutely devoured it. Moreno's voice through the eyes of Thiago is at times comic, and at the same time it shows just how deep Thiago's grief runs. The Itza (Alexa), a smart home device that seems to be haunted, in my eyes is of little import. It seems like just another tool demons can use to torture their victims. There's so much creepy and awe-inspiring imagery in this book, and a lot of great tie-ins to 2001: A Space Odyssey in particular, but also to other works (Cujo, Pet Semetary, etc.) When Thiago moves to Colorado and sees the wall for the first time, I literally got chills. Thiago's relationship with Wilford Brimley is as lovely as it is short. Thankfully, the dog gets a much less sweet second act that makes the fact of its death less awful. Seeing Thiago's relationship with his mother-in-law develop is satisfying. Great book, great cover art.
