Mandatory reading for everyone alive, I think. Seriously. It's such an easy and quick read that gives incredible depth to questions of prisons and systemic racism (and their relationship to classism and misogyny). Also, it's real easy to find a free audiobook version of it on Youtube.

I don't give 5 stars because it's short and sweet and to the point – but 4 years after I read it, I can only recall the vague outlines of it. This text greatly influenced my understanding of the justice system for the better, but it's a jumping off point for anyone who feels less-than-expert on the topic. I will say, her chapter on women’s chain gangs has stuck with me.

So. If you have a free hour to spare, and need a read while washing dishes, go listen to this audiobook.

It was a dense read, but prison reform and abolishment has always been something I have mixed feelings regarding and I wanted to further educate myself.

I hope the medical person who said female inmates don't mind excessive pelvic exams "because they're missing male touch" is dead.

If you vote, read this. Angela Davis is a brilliant national treasure. We read this for book club, and had some excellent discussions. This book is super accessible, and Angela powerfully weaves historical context with early 2000s happenings (the book was written in 2002-2003). Still extremely relevant. If you’re even a tiny bit intrigued about defunding the police, read this book!

Also, spoiler: YES.
