I LOVE that the main character is an AFAB masculine presenting person. And the use of non-standard or "neo" pronouns are *chef's kiss*.

The story was gripping and well told. It was to the point and every word worked to further the story.

Well done thriller overall!

This was a phenomenal read. Tense and gripping, with just the right amount of horror to turn your stomach while keeping you turning pages. I picked it up and did not put it down until I finished.

This is my second book by Ursula. Her writing had a grip on me from start to finish. It’s short, taking only about 2 hrs to read according to the Libby app, but those 2 hours were incredibly rich. She illustrates characters and scenes in a way that reads like a movie in my mind. I do wish it was paced slower at the end. As others mentioned, it did feel a bit rushed, with the solution to the problem a bit too conveniently available.

The pseudo fantastical nature was foreboding and creepy in a good way, but I'm not a big horror person so I mostly just wanted to get away from the sentient fungi.  I did read the short story it is based on which was predominantly vibes, and I liked this reinterpretation of it more than the original because the characters had much more depth.

This is my second Kingfisher book (1st being Nettle and Bone) and I am obsessed with her writing style. It’s very gothic and her descriptions are rooted in the natural, creating very vivid grotesque and gorgeous images. However with that, for its length, it does drag a bit in the beginning but is still well worth the read. As someone who is a Poe fan I found it was a very creative interpretation of the House of Usher and would recommend it to anyone who is in need of a short spooky story.
