I spotted the perpetrator of the historic crime the first time he appeared and figured out the murderer at about 65%
And the love affair is pretty by-the-numbers, so I can't say this series has much to recommend it,
except as mental stimulation while I'm working

This is a series that is just getting better and better. I mean that. Starting this one brought the first book flooding back to me especially with the explosive ending… St Benets is book two in the DI Tanner series and I recommend reading them in order not because of small spoilers if any in this book but because you will get a feel for the characters and the team.
In St Benets (book two) I found there was a lot more going on in this story compared to the first. We have several different cases in this story aswell as the personal side to John and Jennys lives… But do all the cases here link together or not? A real page turner. Brilliant. Easy to devour. I didn’t want to put it down, I wanted answers and was backing John aka DI Tanner the whole time. I love how he lives on a little boat, different. Well written, fast paced and had me trying to guess the outcome the whole time.
I have high hopes for this series and want more and hope there is more to come. A well deserved five stars. Highly recommend. Throughally enjoyed it.

I got book 1 as a free book and liked it so I got book 2. Premise is DI Tanner transferred to rural Norfolk when his teenaged daughter died of an overdose. Previously he was a hot shot detective in London. Spoilers ahead.
I deducted 1 star because the first 10% of this book dealt with his romance with his underling DC Jenny Evans. I don't really read detective books for romance.
The book starts when a defrocked priest (Martin Isaac) is found dead in what looks like a ritual suicide in an abandoned church. Tanner's boss wants to write it off as a suicide but it doesn't look right to Tanner.
Meanwhile, Isaac's grave is split open by lightning during a storm. A young woman who was sheltering there from the rain has her head bashed in with a rock. The grave is subsequently found to be empty and a witness claims to see a man in a robe, like a priest, near the area. A rumor is spread that Isaac rose from his grave to kill the girl.
Investigation into Isaac reveals that 40 years ago he was charged with and acquitted for the rape and murder of a young girl (Clair Judson) who was pushed to her death from a tower. Due to bad publicity Isaac was excommunicated and he subsequently began a death cult. Tanner begins by looking into members of this cult but doesn't get very far when more murders happen.
Isaac was acquitted due to alibis given to him by two other priests. These two priests are the ones who got murdered, first one and then another. Tanner starts to look into the case of Clair Judson because everything seems to be connected.
The plot is well written and suspenseful as the killer is just one step of Tanner throughout the book. There were a few parts where I thought the police should have connected the dots earlier or taken action earlier but overall it was a fast flowing book and I enjoyed it. I'm now on book 3.
After scrolling through some of the other reviews: I did not like the banter between Tanner and Jenny Evans. I thought it was unnecessary and overdone. One reader commented that the reveal was partly clued in at the beginning of the book but it's my habits to skip the prologue so it didn't affect me.

This is the second book in the Detective Tanner Murder Mystery Series and so much more darker.
I loved being back in the setting of the broads. What made this even more enjoyable is that we were lucky enough to have visited St Benet’s when we had a holiday on the Norfolk Broads a couple of years ago so was great to be transported back there again.
The book easily reads as a standalone if you haven’t read the first but would recommend reading it solely as it’s a great start to the series. I have to admit I was slightly dubious about the relationship between Tanner and Jenny that was just starting in the first book but fast forward a couple of months and these two are a great pairing. Jenny is young, vibrant and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself, which is probably a good thing when you have Tanner who is quite set in his ways and doesn’t follow orders well. They work well together and actually really enjoyed not just their working partnership but their personal relationship also.
I absolutely loved the story line in this novel and it was so much darker than the first one. The murders are really gruesome and at times horrific but being a true crime fan, I couldn’t get enough even if I was hiding behind a cushion at times whilst reading!
St Benet’s has thrills and chills galore! It is dark, tense and packed full of mystery. I honestly don’t know how the author is going to op this one but can’t wait to se what he comes up with next. Brilliant read!
