I appreciated this book because it highlighted a period in history where women were legally under the authority of either their fathers or husbands and could in an instant be punished for some untoward deed by being institutionalized, and rendered powerless by being declared mentally unstable. Horrifying. This story was fictional though I’m sure you wouldn’t have to look too far to find a similar true story. I thought the parallel story of the teenager with the mom who she believes to be insane strayed a little bit by getting too far into school bully nastiness. I also thought the story as a while has some very predictable plot lines, especially concerning the girl.

A lot of the teenage character’s portion feels a bit poorly written, or written by a person far removed from young people. overall the story was still good and i enjoyed the book. but the teen characters felt unrealistic most of the time.

I wouldn't say that this is a poorly written book (granted it isn't the most astounding writing in the world), but it sure is poorly concluded. I was very interested in the subject matter, and I was compelled to finish the story, but I was extremely disappointed in how things were wrapped up. It felt rushed, incomplete, and I did not enjoy it.
Book based on the horrors of mental institutions and what if you were committed just because you fell in love with the wrong man. So sad. But based on true stories of the past.
