The first 300 or so pages were unnecessary. The essence of this book happened in the last 100 pages and the cliffhanger seemed to happen at an improper time in the story. I’m interested to see what Vor shall choose to do with Faraine though, so I will read the next.

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! I’ve been trying to read a lot of the more popular romantasy books recently, and have been DNFing quite a few due to the writing style. I thought this was overall well-written and that both main characters were well-thought out and compelling. Nice to see a unique MMC and an FMC who isn’t a warrior princess. The underground setting was interesting as well!

The plot wasn’t the strongest and pretty much everything was left unresolved at the end of the book, but I’ll definitely be reading the next one!

The worst part was getting interrupted while I tried to read at work *eye roll*

Vor was so sweet. And I had a total love/hate relationship with his choice in wife in the best possible way. He did the logical thing for the good of his kingdom despite his desires. I was low key concerned about the whole fake bride thing but the way it worked out in the plot just UGH yes

I really enjoyed both of the characters, though there is always that pained impatience when you watch characters who NEED TO BE TOGETHER not being together. And the cliff hanger! I think these characters suit each other so well.

Also! Definitely more steamy than the other books I've read. It was a good scene.

I have been reading the Doomed City series and I love how we get this look at the history of the trolls in Doomed City. It offers depth to the race and culture, that is touched on and hinted at in the other series. That's something I love about Mercedes's books; so many take place in the same world, but they don't feature the same characters. They so loosely touch each other, but when you find those connections it makes the story even better.

This was my first ever read by Sylvia Mercedes, and I am just delighted by her writing! Did I get a tall, rock solid, BLUE Trolde king? Yes. But I also got kingdoms at war, another kingdom in peril, princesses with unique magic, political intrigue, and plenty of fast-paced action. I absolutely devoured this book. It left my heart aching for Faraine and Vor.
