This was an interesting in the sense that the magic was different and so was the landscape. I enjoyed the magic and getting to know the sisters. The MC was strong willed and I enjoyed learning about her gift!

This one was a bit different which was nice. The instant love was a bit much and I did not care for the overlapping timelines between POVs - it’s fine to be done here and there when something important happens so you get multiple perspectives for emphasis but not at every change of POV! I am intrigued enough to want to read the next book

WOW. I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. It's been a LONG time since a book has sucked me in so much that all I wanted to do was figure out what happened next. My heart was pounding from the nonstop tension, and there were SO many twists I didn't seen coming that absolutely delighted me! I thought I had this story figured out. I was dead wrong, and I LOVED IT.

I also really enjoyed Faraine as a female lead. Finally, a lead who shows off INNER strength and doesn't have to be physically intimidating or strong to still be awesome! Now, one could argue that Faraine doesn't fight back as much as she could, and maybe that's true. But maybe that's part of her growth arc for the story as well (TBD). But she suffers from a debilitating condition and yet still tries to help others and do good, even when all she wants is isolation. She was willing to put the good of the kingdom ahead of her own desires, even after living a life where she was undesired, including by her parents. That speaks more to me than characters who barge through life taking what they want.

ALTHOUGH, I was pleasantly surprised by Lyria's character. I thought we were getting the classic evil half-sister. Nope! And she was a hoot to read! I'm definitely getting vibes she's getting together with Sul later, but I guess we'll see if my suspicions prove true. Most of them didn't this book, and that's ok!

My only criticism so far is that very little of the trolde language is explained. I love the unique world and the creatures, traditions, and terms the author has created, but aside from a few that are blatantly explained to the human characters, others are not, and it begs some confusion. Like roag. What's a roag besides the green stuff infecting the populace? Or is that it? But it's a minor thing and I'm sure we'll learn more in the sequels, which I am dying to read!

This also seems to be an example of a romance trilogy done right. Lots of romantic tension this book, and we got a sampling...but not enough to feel fully satisfied, so we have something to look forward to in the next book. Onward!

I think it could've used some more editing and needed more character development. The writing isn't as strong as I thought it would be.

Plot or Character Driven: A mix

I liked the concept of the story, the characters and the world. The text itself took a very long time to get going though, the first half was very drawn out with too much focus on emotions and thoughts. It would have benefited from being a shorter book with less filler.

Bland plot and zero connection to the main characters... Meh

4.5 stars!!

Bride of the Shadow King is an absolute delight. I was hooked from the first page! Faraine's character is so perfectly communicated, I was able to both root for and sympathize with her throughout the machinations of the forces around her. Her struggle to assert her own values and desires within the constructs of her societal role made her interactions with Vor so much more powerful to me.

Vor! The greenest flag of an ml that ever waved, King of my heart. Anyone who loves romance but also cringes at the consistent lack of consent and communication that the genre is often inundated with will fall immediately in love with Vor. The communication, the consent, the pure human DECENCY in every line of his internal monologue was a delight and I cannot get enough.

This book is a full, raving five stars from me and I cannot wait to get the other two books in my hands asap.
