For fans of The Water Dancer, the mystical realism and raw reality of this book make it a great read. There was such power, too, in replacing the words “slave” and “master” with “stolen” and “thief” respectively. Highly recommend.

DID NOT FINISH: 31%

I was into it at first but what I wanted,  the exploration of love and friendship, isn’t in the foreground. There’s little lines here and there but not what I wanted. Plus, there’s something about the writing style that reminds me of a slave narrative and I’m not really wanting that. I wanted the love stories.

This is my third book by the author and I can honestly say that I've found a new favorite. I love the way he takes different POVs and makes them each come to life with distinct voices and perspectives. I generally don't like magical realism, but it was done so well that I really couldn't imagine the book without it.
