I don’t think I really like the old bodice rippers anymore.

The writing quality isn’t bad but if you’re sick of the tropes like me, don’t read it.

I’m not super into the tropes and compared to other reviews it’s putting it lightly. It was a fascinating phase of historical fiction/romance but I’m glad it’s different now

3 stars for not being really awful writing though yeah the rape and such is not so great. (No means no and jfc I’m glad they write the hero with self control these days. Much less creepy)

Oh and Lord Royce casually mentioned “taking” some serfs where they were. It’s the tip of the iceberg with this stuff.

So yeah this book is a relic of the bodice ripper days - you get what you’d expect from these

So bad it's good. I first read this when I was 13. It was the first romance novel I read. It's trash and I love it. Like most romance novels it follows a predictable formula. The characters are the same as almost every other book, especially Lindsey's own books. If you're looking for a book with even a small degree of historical accuracy, I don't recommend this one. I only recommend this book as a fluffy read after you've read something heavy and deep like Shantaram or Wild or Educated.

3.5 stars. This is a cute story! You can definitely tell it's old, but it's still fun to read.

Well this was off to a promising start, as you can see by my update at around page 130. I'm now at page 200 and I'm DNFing the book.

The first 100 pages or so are decent, like 3 stars. There's a lot of typos, but I was able to look past that for the uniqueness of the book. Let's face it, there just aren't that many viking romances out there, and I thought the author did a good job of setting the scene. I also liked that the female lead was a strong woman.

I don't know what happened after page 130 though. It's like our heroine lost her damn mind and became an infatuated school girl. I can't even count the number of times the author described Kristen as "giggling". Meanwhile, this girl is enslaved, wearing chains that are making her bleed, working long days, and her friends and cousins are also enslaved and doing hard labor. I just don't get it.

She decides to sleep with the leader because she finds him sexy and knows he's "the one". But then this stupid high school back and forth ensues where the heroine is like "nah I don't want to fuck you anymore because you keep me chained up". Like what? Girl, I thought you slept with him because you were falling for him, not because you thought you'd be unchained. Is she supposed to be manipulating him for her freedom? Or is she supposed to be in love with him? The way the book is written really puts these motives at odds and it's frustrating as hell to read.

By page 175, I was just bored. There's been a few back to back sex scenes, which is fine and all, but I kind of want a plot too and I'm just not getting it. It's basically just Kristen being enslaved and fucking Royce at night zzzzzzzzzzzzz. I can only read so many pages of them faux fighting and banging uglies.

So 2 stars because the first 1/3rd of the book was decent, but the middle sucked and I can't see the rest of it being any better. What a disappointing book.

I can totally see why this is the highest rated out of this series. It was so good for several reasons.

Kristen’s disposition was so sunny. Everything about her humor and outlook is mind boggling, and I will henceforth strive to be like her.

Royce was a great hero. He was a little different than the other Lindsey heroes I’ve read so far. He carried a lot more about consent and all that good stuff.

It was so fun to see Brenna and Garrick as parents. I can’t wait to see what Selig’s story is. I’m sad there aren’t more books in the world.
