Hearts Aflame was an interesting read... One the of only things that saved this book for me was the heroine. Royce was kind of a rapey dick. The sudden turnaround and change of heart at the end with the "Oh I'm actually going to marry you" was a no for me. Too sudden and there was no hint leading up to it. Even Kirsten's flip-flopping with 'will she give into Royce or won't she give in to Royce' was getting too old for me. I did like the angst though.

I think this might be my favorite Johanna Lindsey book. Rereading it in 2020 after the author's death this holds up so much better than the first in the series.

This was my first historical romance with no fantasy elements in the story. It was a good story and I was engaged the whole time I was reading this book. I enjoyed the characters, our main heroine was wonderful and full of spirit. The romance was amusing and it was cute to see two very different people get to know each other. However, some of the plot points dragged on and others I felt were glossed over. The ones that were glossed over felt or were solved really quickly or did not impact the romance at all.

I've read this story multiple times, as it's a good one: well-written with likable characters. My one problem with the story, though, is that the steamy scenes, while steamy, make me cringe. Truly consensual forced sex is all well and good, but only within a fantasy role-playing scenario, and this story did not contain any such scenarios. So the steamy scenes managed to be both enjoyable and insufferable at the same time. But as it's one of the first romance stories I ever read, it will always remain a part of my collection and I'm sure I'll reread it, cringes and all, again. :)

Less rapey, but still came up a bit too often for comfort

I really enjoyed this addition of the series. I liked Kristen's bluntness and how it always seemed to put Royce on the defensive.
