J.D. Robb

4.05 AVERAGE

A NYPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas investigates the murder of an accountant in front of a building being remodeled. While the attack was made to seem to be that of a mugging gone bad, several clues point towards a this being a clumsy, yet planned out attack and murder to cover up something the account uncovered. Why and who is the question.
This is the first book I read by this author and I figured I would try this author and this series, but it just did not work for me.

I always enjoy the crew in these books and the way they work together. Also that she keeps coming up with such despicable villains.

While I'm not overly impressed by the plot/mystery in this installment of the series, I'm still all about the connections between the characters in the In Death books. Even when the murder is far less juicy and/or horrific than previous ones, Robb makes up for that with the subplot of the film premier, which Eve is, of course, dreading. Her fear of being made up by Trina, of enduring the paparazzi, the ridiculousness of the whole deal, is why I love Eve Dallas. She's me. Or at least, I see some of myself in her. It's why I keep coming back to the series. It's not the murders, it's the characters. Can't wait to pick up the next installment.

The book has nothing wrong, but there's nothing great, either. Just your basic murder for Eve to solve. And she does, with the usual bruises and a climax wherein a killer is confronted. Nothing new here, which makes it predictable. Humorous dialogue using 2013 slang makes it funny to an audience now. The characters all do what they should. It felt like slipping on a comfortable pair of sweats. But I didn't feel any urgency to figure out who the killer was. I hope to see further character growth so the series isn't so predictable.

ONE DAY I am going to catch up....maybe? But I always want to hoard my time with Eve and her crew because I love this series so dang much. This was a nice calmer breath of air (l o l) compared to the previous book and I appreciated the contrast and the story so much. I love Eve and her sass and Peabody was cracking me up in this one.
