I really enjoyed the first book of this series but this one really dragged at the beginning. There was tons of explanation and talking, and not much doing. By the middle things picked up and I still enjoyed spending time with these characters in this world.

Eh, it was okay. There's something about the pacing of this series that seems a little bit off. I liked the ideas Bujold was exploring here and her descriptive writing was top notch as per usual, but it just started meandering a bit as it continued in book 2. The action and conflicts seemed a bit contrived, especially towards the end of book 2. Also, I just want to punch Dag's brother Dar, what a jerk. Still continuing with the series but not that excited.

A continuation of the story. Dealing with intolerance is the theme, and it is wound round with magic, family matters, balancing cultures and an interesting take on what makes up a monster.

Good, slow comfort reading for a stressful time. These books still kinda trick me, the way they have dramatic fantastic battles tucked in to each book — it takes a lot of remembering not to be braced for the climax/resolution also to be a big fight scene. But I think I prefer that the main plot line is actually about family, identity, and belonging.

Satisfying

This book continued the story of Fawn and Dag. The plot was satisfying, heartwrenching at some parts. You can't help but root for Fawn and Dag as they confront Dag's Lakewalker family, but Bujold helps you see the situation from all sides. A great book.

Daily life with the main couple is fascinating to read about even with the slow pace. Moments of tension with violence. Incredible worldbuilding and prose.

I just really love this series. It's just so cozy and cute to me.

I enjoyed this one more than the first book in the series - a more interesting plot.
