This is one of the best first books of a trilogy. I have ever read the amount of twists in this book were amazing. They were phenomenally done. I didn't really see any of them coming. The last a 100 pages or so, were so tense and I was so worried. The book was really emotional at points. I loved the main character, Vis. He had so many different motives for what he was doing whether it was outside forces pushing him one way or his internal motives. This book is compared to red rising and I can definitely see why, but there was just so many more mysteries going on in this book that had me gripped.

Very interesting world building/ magic system. Overall tone was more serious than I’m used to. There were many gripping points, but some slower sections that were hard for me to get through.

I'm only a casual fantasy reader, but after loving Babel last year on Book Tik Tok's recommendation, I decided to trust them on this rec, too, and oh my god, I'm so glad I did. The first section of the book feels like a conventional fantasy story, but as the pages creep up, the conventions start getting broken, the mysteries swiftly intensify, and the story gets more and more gripping. Up to the halfway mark, this was a 3 star read for me, but after the first 'WTF is actually going on' moment, I couldn't put this book down. I will be sleeping outside the bookshop for the second book's publication.
