It’s Stuart Little meets Divergent meets Hunger Games. I was holding my breath most of the book having no idea what was going to happen next. The world building was effective, the attention to detail, background, and side characters help build it all out. I almost took off 0.25 stars because I just want to know MORE but that’s the sign of a great book. I’ll be frozen and pondering until the next one comes out. Don’t read any spoilers or even the description, just buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Rounded up 5 stars!! Knocked off a bit of a star just because the writing style was pretty basic and not super engaging, but that could be just because of my personal mindset right now.

Things I liked:
-world building was solid and a lot of that was due to “show versus tell”. As is often the case with a 1st installment in fantasy, there was a good bit of “tell versus show” but that is to be expected and wasn’t overdone.  for example that we really got a sense for Vis’ training regimen.
-classic dark academia vibe; lots of good tropes
- good plot pace! The first part was a bit slow as we got introduced to the plot but things pick up quickly

Things I loved:
- the  Roman flavor; the clothes, the architecture, social hierarchies, etc. were all unique and interesting AND added to the actual plot
- AMAZING ENDING!!! Sooo many questions left unanswered in a way that makes me excited for book 2.

Things that were meh:
- how “will” works - we get a lot of technobabble as V studies but we didn’t get a clear understanding of the mechanics of the magic system

It's mostly the setting / the world that didn't really appeal to me.
