Very interesting world building/ magic system. Overall tone was more serious than I’m used to. There were many gripping points, but some slower sections that were hard for me to get through.

I have been in an absolutely vicious reading slump, but when I say that this book whole-heartedly renewed my love for reading, I mean it. The only reason why I hesitate to give it a full 5/5 is because I want to acquaint myself with other fantasy novels and see how they compare, but there’s a strong chance I’ll come back to this review and update it to just that. Off the jump this book grabs you by the collar and ensconces you in the world Vis walks through. There was genuinely no dull moment, which for me, is one of the most important things a book can offer. Before you know it, you find yourself rooting on the side of this mysterious MC and twisting with worry at everything and everyone that may slight him. Islington set this book up perfectly for the sequel, and I deadass can’t wait till it drops. Absolutely recommend this book if you’re looking for something new to sit in your top favorites.

Holy shit.

I am a different person.

It’s the truly insane and audible ‘what the actual fuck’ moment I experienced reading the final chapter for me.

Truly, holy shit and what the fuck.

This book is written super well, the setting is interesting, the characters are developed, but it's a little too long and the end is a bit confusing. I really enjoyed the book until about the 450 page mark, then felt like it was dragging, then it picked back up at about the 550 page mark. I loved the main character and I found him compelling! I also really like the roman atmosphere for a fantasy novel. I just wish it had kept the exciting steam-maybe it could have been about 100 pages shorter
