I’m DNFing this book. From reading some of the reviews, especially from people whose reading taste I’m familiar with, the things that are bothering me now in the book aren’t going to get any better. I’m only semi-interested in these characters, and it’s not enough to drag me through the men-doing-awful-things-to-women in virtually every chapter

Weyward has an interesting premise. I enjoyed the characters, the atmosphere, the connections across time, and the descriptions of the beauty and wonder of the natural world. I listened to the audiobook, and the performance was excellent.

However, I went into this book expecting an empowering story, and it didn’t hit that mark for me. I don’t mind books that explore difficult themes—but I expected Weyward to balance its tragedies with moments of strength, and instead, it was hardship after hardship, with barely any relief.

In the end, the resolutions the main characters found—whether freedom or revenge—felt underwhelming.

It was meh for me. If you decide to pick it up, I encourage you to check content warnings first.

The concept drew me in but it lost me with the heavy handed pregnancy throughline. While I love stories about punishing men, I wish it went deeper than 2nd wave #girlboss feminism. I enjoyed the writing but the themes were not for me.

I just don’t have it in me to listen to a heavy story right now with such detailed instances of the trigger warnings. That said, I do believe these characters stories deserve to be told and are very real for some folks (unfortunately), I just don’t have it in me to read this right now.
