In true Mark Billingham style, this novel is a nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat crime thriller. It is well-written with a cast of fascinating characters (some of whom will be familiar to fans of the Tom Thorne series), and plot twists that are completely unexpected. Highly recommended. Thanks to Mark Billingham and Pigeonhole for the ARC.

Predictable and plot holed. Got the two stars tho cause the author had a good sense of humour and put in a few jokes that made me he he he a couple of times when reading this
Might be giving this book a little more love than it deserves, as it’s not that much different from all the other Thorne novels. However, as I was dreading the end of the story, positive that I was going to hate it (on page 370 of 401!), only for the author to come up with a COMPLETELY satisfying conclusion, I felt the need to be generous.

Towards the end of this novel there is a line that sums it up nicely.
"Seriously weird, the way it all turned out."
Never a truer word has been spoken. The word "weird" could easily be replaced by "stupid". The ending is incomplete as there are so many unanswered questions. Not that I'm always looking for neatly wrapped endings, it's just that this one just stopped on a huge cliff hanger. It's a book, not a soap opera.
I didn't really enjoy this as it hugely references previous books in the series that I haven't read, not a real issue, but this kind of thing could just go on and on and on. An escaped killer comes back without any real reason to taunt Tom Thorne, but does it anyway.
