I felt a whole range of emotions reading this and that is all thanks to the wonderful, intriguing prose. Everything about it felt real, it was heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.
Sometimes I struggle to get into the cadence of his language, reacquaint myself with the terms used... but once I do I can settle in for a great read. Mr. Ryan is really a talented writer, so fluid and evocative. Though not my favorite of his books I did enjoy this novel.
This was an interesting read. The writing was almost stream of consciousness, with each chapter being a week in Melody's pregnancy. The author makes short work for 180 pages, but crams ALL the feelings and so much manages to convey so many events, it's a "quick and dirty" read. Full of heartache and loss and emotion and drama.
I was given this as a recommendation by a bookseller in Dublin, when I asked for a good truly Irish book. I typically look for happier books, but the writing was beautiful and the tone was typically Irish.

This book broke my heart umpteen times. A book about how we are all interconnected; about how shame and guilt can warp not just one life, but many; of bravery and redemption when you feel you have nothing else to lose.
the female voice by a male writer very well done

I highly enjoyed this book. The prose was beautiful, and it painted the scene without being too direct about the plot. Each chapter revealed a bit more about her past while talking about her present, but it didn’t jump around too much. There were so many little twists it kept me engaged. There’s a good balance between plot and conceptual thoughts, which I enjoyed. Very satisfying ending, and not too long for me to lose interest. A little hard to understand with some Irish slang, but worth the read.
