It took me a while to get back into this world and the characters, but after I did, I really enjoyed this installment. I really wish we got more interaction between Alexia and Lord Maccon. But I still loved all the witty humor and banter that we did get. The ending of this was not at all what I was expecting and I'm mildly angry with Gail Carriger for doing that to these characters. Hopefully there is a great explanation in Blameless for the actions of a certain someone.
I love Alexia's wit and relationship between Conall and herself. The plot of this volume is slower in pace than the first one, but I would encourage anyone to finish it, because the plot was good. If one doesn't like steampunk novels, you hardly notice until something more technologically advanced is mentioned. It easy to guess what is exorcising the ghosts and causing the rest of the supernatural community mortal, although it only becomes very apparent around the middle of the book and, of course, you realize it before the characters do. I do admit I was yelling at Alexia as she fumbled through it and found it a little frustrating. The ending was less satisfying. It is very well known that there is little anyone knows about preternaturals, so it made me a little angry to see Conall behave the way he did, then again, who wouldn't be mad? I guess I'll see how this plays out in the next installment.
As with Soulless, I enjoyed the story but not the writing style. As this book ended on much more of a cliff-hanger I am definitely going to be reading the third book, but I'm still having trouble with how it reads. I don't know why, but I think it might be because the author switches how she refers to characters (e.g., sometimes saying Lady Maccon and sometimes saying Alexia though there isn't really a pattern to which she uses) and she switches viewpoints too often (in my opinion). This makes the reading less smooth and I have to go back sometimes and make sure I know which character is doing what. I do think this was closer to a three-star book than the first one, though, so hopefully the third book will be even better!
Not nearly as well written as the first book, but still enjoyable as hell. A few small issues with how long it took getting to the real meat of the mystery (focused too much on pack drama) and the ending was borderline insanity-inducing.
Mostly well written and enjoyable. The ending didn’t quite work for me though it’s clearly setting up the next book. Too much of the insipid Ivy, but overall just as fun as Soulless.

What can I say? My second read and it's still an amazing book. A little angry about a main character's life choices at the end but I thoroughly enjoyed this.
This was an excellent entry in the series. The action is solid, the dialog crisp and witty and contains a pretty good mystery to boot. I know there is some debate as to whether this is or is not Steampunk but I consider it to be. Just the same it is out of ordinary enough that for non-fans of Steampunk I would still recommend it.
