This book started out well, capturing a lot of energy of the first of the series, but suffers from a very unfortunate and cliffhanger. Thankfully the whole series is finished so I didn't have to wait very long but cliffhangers of that nature in series such as these are really annoying and are automatically a one star deduction.

A disappointment. Before I get to my biggest problem, the book itself is fun and I liked the addition of Madame Lafoux, but I would've liked more of Alexia and Maccon actually being in the same place. The biggest issue, overshadowing everything else in the book leading up to it, was the ending. I was so mad, so cliche, so unnecessary, and so unpleasant to read. I haven't decided yet if I'll keep reading the series because it may be a bad enough plot point to put me off entirely.

Audiobook (Emily Gray)
3/5
Summary: Slightly comedic, steampunk, pnr romance - the continuing story of Lord Conall Maccon (werewolf alpha) and advisor to the Queen, soulless Alexia. Mystery, drama and a bit of angst continue when a strange magical phenomenon spreads through London and the pair travel to Scotland for answers.
Stats: PNR/HR - Werewolf M/"Soulless" F, second in a series, does not stand alone, very limited open door/fade to black.
Notes: A bit of a romp, enjoyable - but less so than the first book.
Incomplete, but still spoilery, Content Warnings (CW) and Trigger Warnings (TW)sickness, pregnancy, accusation of infidelity, violence, death

This series is satisfying on so many levels -- fun romance, clever ladies, and a right proper cup of tea!
I was very afraid that now that Alexia was married, she would become the "dutiful wife" and fade into the background, only coming forward to gush about her husband. Not so, to my happy relief.
I will be reading the third of this very interesting series.

Let's start with a summary. The plot is pretty basic. For some reason, areas of London and Scotland are being prenaturaled. Supernaturals are being reverted to humans, that is. Supposedly impossible, because prenatural powers don't work like that. Problematic for sever reasons, the main ones being that everyone is starting to age. Lord Maccon goes off to Scotland to find the source and, of course, Alexi follows him.
Okay, I love Alexi. I rarely say I love a character, but I absolutely adore her. She is witty, intelligent, full of purpose, doesn't shy from hard tasks, and kicks through all the gender roles set out for her. And she doesn't take bullshit from ANYONE! Not even her husband. She's fiery and brilliant at what she does, and has all the qualities a heroine needs. Even if she is not practiced in martial arts, or know how to kill someone like the back of her hands, she doesn't shy away from a fight and uses her head in the process.
The minor characters are prats compared to her. Maybe that was the purpose? I don't know. Her sister is a bitch, a selfish and sniveling little girl who has to make everyone around her miserable. Her family takes advantage of Alexi's position and kindness to an unacceptable degree, even though they ridiculed her time and time again. Ivy didn't much better in my eyes. She's just so... overly feminine! and selfish and dramatic. They piss me off so much. Madame Lefoux is a much more suited friend for Alexi in my opinion. They're both smart and headstrong women who have purposes in life besides being the perfect wife (I know, one's a lesbian, but that's not the point). I know back then Alexi and Lefoux would be considered scandalous, and Ivy and Felicity perfect ladies of good breeding, but those two just... anger me with how simple minded and plain and self-centered they are.
Alexi and Maccon's relationship is just sweet, and practically perfect. He doesn't try to change her, or impose on her, even if he is an alpha and a Scottish male born in pre-Victorian era. That was until the end when he yelled at her and told her in very impolite terms that she was a whore. And she just stood there and took it! I wanted to smack him. He's not stupid or dumb in any way. Why does it make sense to me and not to him? Prenatural and Werewolf = human fertilization! Sigh. I honestly hope he doesn't lose her.
This book was amazing. I'm setting aside all my other books in favour of the next one.
